Drug Testing in Golf!

July 7th, 2008

This week marks a new era in the PGA Tour, as golfers will now be tested for drugs.  Anabolic steroids, hormones and related substances, diuretics and other masking agents, drugs of abuse (marijuana and cocaine, for example), stimulants and beta blockers are some of the banned substances.

Testing will be conducted randomly, and no member of the PGA tour will know when testing will occur for them.

Penalties for violators include disqualification, forfeiture of prize money or FedEx Cup points, ineligibility and fines.
Woods, an advocate for drug testing, agrees with the implementation of drug tests. During an AT&T National conference call Monday, he said he had himself tested twice in the past six months and said both tests were negative.

Testing of this nature, where some of the banned substances are over the counter medication can be controversial, but as long as the drug testing plan includes allowances for player’s necessary medication; the testing regime can remain focused on catching players using drugs to enhance their performance.

Our drug tests for drugs of abuse are useful for on-the-spot drug testing.
