Fingerprint Drug Testing
What Can Our Fingerprints Reveal?
Since the first use of fingerprint identification in 1858, we've known that the combination of whorls, arches and loops that make up the pattern of our fingerprint is unique to each finger.
When you look at your finger, the friction ridges on the pad of the finger contain tiny eccrine sweat glands which exude a sticky salty liquid. When the finger is pressed against a surface, more of this liquid is exuded to aid in grip.
When Scenes of Crime officers ‘dust’ for prints using aluminium powder, they are looking for eccrine sweat that has been transferred to a surface and leaves behind the intricate shape of a fingerprint.
What you may not know, however, is that eccrine sweat can now be used to test for drugs of abuse, simply and quickly.
The fingerprint screening system currently detects 4 of the most common drug types in one simple test. A sample is collected into a test cassette by pressing the finger on the collection pad, before the sample is washed through the cassette by buffer and transferred to the reader for analysis.
The sample collection takes less than a minute, and results are available in 10 minutes.
Benefits of Fingerprint Testing
Non-invasive & Dignified
The system works by analysing fingerprint sweat, so sample collection is non-invasive and straight forward.
Sample collection takes less than a minute and analysis for multiple drugs of abuse takes around 10 minutes.
The system is compact and portable, for convenient drug screening any time, in almost any location.
Fingerprint Testing is quick and easy, with no need for gender-specific collection areas or testing officers, specialist handling or area preparation.
Low risk of adulteration, and impossible to deliver a diluted or substitute sample.
If a test shows non-negative at screening stage, a fingerprint-based laboratory confirmation service is available to identify the exact metabolite or analyte present and give expert opinion for any action that needs to be taken. Simply take another two sets of samples using the fingerprint collection kit for laboratory analysis.
