Rapid urine test for GHB detection at 10 µg/mL for clinical and forensic use
The gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) Test Cassette is a rapid immunoassay device that detects GHB in urine at a cut-off of 10 µg/mL. GHB is a central nervous system depressant associated with recreational misuse and drug-facilitated sexual assault.
Because GHB clears from the body rapidly, often within 4-8 hours of ingestion, fast testing is critical in clinical and forensic settings. The cassette format requires only 3 drops of urine and delivers a clear visual result in 5 minutes, making it practical for emergency departments, sexual assault referral centres (SARCs) and forensic drug testing programmes.
Product and testing parameters
Low cut-off of 10 µg/mL for sensitive detection of GHB in urine
Fast results in 5 minutes - essential given GHB's rapid clearance from the body
Cassette format with dropper application for straightforward, reproducible sample delivery
Suitable for emergency, clinical and forensic settings where rapid GHB screening is required
No specialist equipment needed - can be used at the point of care
Clear two-line result format - easy to interpret and document
About GHB Testing
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a central nervous system depressant that occurs endogenously in the brain and is also used recreationally and in drug-facilitated sexual assault. Its short detection window in urine (typically 4-12 hours) means rapid, early specimen collection and testing is essential in clinical and forensic investigations.
Why is the cut-off for GHB set at 10 µg/mL?
GHB is an endogenous substance naturally present in human urine at low concentrations. The 10 µg/mL cut-off is calibrated to detect exogenous (externally administered) GHB while avoiding false positives from normal endogenous production.
How quickly does GHB clear from urine?
GHB typically clears from urine within 4-12 hours of ingestion, depending on the dose and the individual. Early specimen collection is therefore critical in suspected drug-facilitated assault cases.
What settings is the GHB Test Cassette designed for?
The test is designed for emergency departments, sexual assault referral centres (SARCs), forensic drug testing programmes and any clinical or forensic setting where rapid GHB screening is required.
Does a negative result confirm GHB was not taken?
No. A negative result may indicate GHB is absent or below the cut-off level. Given GHB's rapid clearance, a negative result does not exclude GHB use, particularly if collection is delayed. All clinical decisions should be made in conjunction with the full clinical picture.
Are there substances that cross-react with the GHB test?
Refer to the IFU for a full list of potential cross-reactants. GHB's structural analogues, such as 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BD) and gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), may also produce a non-negative result.
