About Nitazene Synthetic Opioids
Nitazenes are a structurally distinct class of synthetic opioids that have emerged as novel psychoactive substances. Several nitazene compounds have been identified in overdose deaths globally. Their detection in drug checking programmes is important for informing harm reduction responses and public health alerts.
What are nitazenes?
Nitazenes are a class of potent synthetic opioids originally synthesised in the 1950s. They have re-emerged as novel psychoactive substances and are associated with a high overdose risk due to their potency, which can exceed that of morphine and fentanyl.
What types of samples can be tested?
The Nitazene Powder Test Cassette is designed for powder samples that have been dissolved in water. It is not suitable for biological specimens such as urine or oral fluid.
Who is the Nitazene Test Cassette suitable for?
It is designed for drug checking services, harm reduction organisations, toxicology services, forensic drug testing teams and law enforcement agencies screening for novel synthetic opioids.
What does a non-negative result mean?
A non-negative result indicates that a nitazene compound may be present at or above the 2000 ng/mL cut-off. All non-negative results should be confirmed by laboratory analysis to identify the specific compound.
Can the cassette detect all nitazenes?
The test is designed to detect a range of nitazene compounds. Refer to the IFU for the specific analytes and cross-reactivity profile. New nitazene analogues continue to emerge, and cross-reactivity may vary.
