Independent study highlights effectiveness of new-generation drink spike testing

Drink safety is an increasingly urgent concern in venues like bars, clubs and festivals around the world. With substances like GHB being used to spike drinks, there’s a clear need for reliable, easy-to-use testing tools that can detect these substances quickly and accurately.

A 2025 study published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences takes a closer look at drink spike detection tools, including both first and second generation GHB testing products. Testing a variety of beverages from vodka and red wine to Diet Coke and orange juice – the study found:

  • Many first-generation tests struggled with coloured drinks or required high concentrations of GHB to trigger a result
  • Second-generation enzymatic tests, like our SureScreen Diagnostics test were able to detect GHB at concentrations as low as 0.1 mg/mL – well below the level associated with harmful effects

These findings highlight the importance of advanced detection methods in safeguarding the public. By using an enzymatic reaction, SureScreen Diagnostic’s test delivers greater sensitivity and reliability, even in challenging drink conditions.

While parts of the US, such as California and Austin, Texas, have begun to mandate the availability of drink spike testing devices in licensed venues, the UK currently lacks a regulated framework in this space. Despite this, the need to protect people from drink spiking remains just as critical.

At SureScreen Diagnostics, we believe that safety shouldn’t wait for regulation. By offering scientifically validated testing solutions we can help venues, universities and individuals take proactive steps to reduce harm and increase confidence on nights out.
